Hello new interns!

Welcome to ACLA! In order to help you feel ready to begin this great internship experience, we wanted to share some tips and helpful hints with you:

Even though you’ll feel like you don’t have any time to read anything else because grad school is totally crazy, really try to make time to read the blogs that Kelley recommends. You’ll learn a lot!
Read this fabulous list of Kelley Quirks compiled by last year’s interns, so you know what you’re getting yourself into. It will give you a good feel for the type of boss that Kelley is, namely, awesome.
You will meet so many librarians, and you will not be able to remember all of their names. It’s okay, most won’t remember yours either. Just introduce yourself again and keep smiling.
This job allows you think about important, big picture, public library issues. Be inspired!
This past year SRC Training meetings often took place at Panera, so make sure to work that into your budget occasionally. Did you know they have macaroni and cheese now?
Don’t be afraid to speak up and share your creative ideas in meetings. Kelley is super supportive and gives good feedback.
Unfortunately, not everyone in Allegheny County loves RC… yet. But if you hug him, you’ll start to understand why he’s so lovable.
You might want to bring your lunch to the office most days, since the best places to eat in the West End are not here any longer. Maybe a new great place will open while you’re here?!
The temperature in the office is fickle, so come to work wearing layers, because it will drastically change temperature throughout the day.
If at all possible, do not take the bus to the West End, especially not the 31.

And mostly, have fun! Kelley is truly a great boss, and everyone else here at ACLA is pretty wonderful too. We wish you the best of luck with your studies at Pitt, and we hope you enjoy this year working at ACLA!

Took some time to poke around different kidlit blogs and resources -- it's been a while since I did this. It was really good to get inspiration, and I'd like to remember to do this--maybe for an hour each week--in the future.

I am in California! But I'm going to do a little work, since I still have one hour of my ten hours to work. See the "Notes" at the bottom of my last three posts. Basically, I worked 2 extra hours from 3/28 - 4/1, 2 extra hours from 4/4 - 4/8, and 5 extra hours from 4/11 - 4/15. 2+2+5=9. Right?
So I am going to blog about something...
Update: I did not blog last week, so I will post next week during our "break" between spring and summer terms when we're not supposed to work.

You guys are rockin' and rollin' here! Thanks for ALL the help with the training so far - your organization has kept me sane! AND I SO appreciate all the work with the One Book Every Young Child materials. You are the best! We're moving along with the SRC logo and the blog and we're now working on creating a twitter account for RC (that's his name), a Facebook page and a Flickr account - all of which you'll be helping maintain and add to this summer. WOOHOO! I think we'll also be traveling around to some libraries to take pics/video of programs. Would either or both of you be willing to split your long day into 2 days a week this summer to have a little more access to library programs? Not required, but it'd be cool if that were possible!

Great semester, gals! I hope you feel as good about it as I do! After the holidays is when the busy-ness will really get busy! January-April is my busiest time. And it's all about SRC. Of course, now we are adding in the SPLP work and the CCAs so we'll be even busier!

The training is our biggest priority. And now that we have a location and a bit of structure, we can really start moving fast once you get back from Christmas Break.

The beginning of May sees a real drop in our projects/activities so we're going to be focusing on how to make the 2012 SPLP and 2011 CCAs even better next year. So there will be some surveys and data to collect and you'll also be helping me manage the SRC budget (where each library gets $200 to spend on incentives and/or prizes.) I deal with all the receipts and purchase orders, so I'm going to be handing some of that off to you two. FUN!
